I don't feel I can really capture Kirk & crew. So this is about my own set of characters; very similar of course, and intended as an homage.
As for it being the Surya, that's partly fate. I really like the Reliant from Star Trek II, and wanted to use a "TV-era" version of that ship, which was to be the U.S.S. Excellent. But the best model I could find had the name built in as part of the mesh. So it became the Surya. (I didn't find another mesh until after the first story was done.) It may be just as well, as the ship's emblem is based off of a symbol of the Hindu god (goddess?) Surya; and I think it looks really good.
